Barcaldine ‘The Black’ Castle was built between 1601 and 1609 as a military outpost, by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy (Black Duncan). The Campbell of Barcaldine family are descended from Black Duncan’s son Para Beg ‘Little Black Patrick’ (first of Barcaldine).
The castle is built in the L plan. The walls are approximately 9ft thick and built of local stone. The castle boasts 2 secret stairs, a dungeon and the original yett for protecting the entrance.
The family abandoned the castle in 1735 to build a mansion house in Barcaldine village. Between 1897 and 1906 the castle was restored by Sir Duncan Campbell (tenth of Barcaldine). The exterior stonework is original, the turrets were added at the restoration and the interior from the great hall to the roof were renewed during the restoration.
The Campbell family sold the castle in 2009 to Yorkshireman David Whitehead who is passionate about the building and sharing the experience of staying here.
