Overlooking the Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is 1,000 ft long, 100 ft high, and famous for appearing in the Harry Potter films. Also near this 21-arched Viaduct is the Glenfinnan Station Museum, so it’s well worth the trip.
This beloved Viaduct is only 1.5–2 hours from Barcaldine by car, with some handy parking nearby. You’re free to walk under and around it, get some nice shots, and watch out for flying cars. However, trespassing on the Viaduct is highly dangerous, so please stay away from the tracks.
“So how will I get a view from on top?” we hear you ask.
On the train, of course!
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is part of a steam train journey like no other. Passengers can travel from Fort William to Mallaig on the grand Jacobite. From the Viaduct and many other points on the journey, the Jacobite takes in some of Scotland’s most breathtaking scenery.
The 84-mile journey, starting near Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain, runs along the Viaduct, visits Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station and the charming village of Arisaig, and provides stunning picturesque views of both Scotland’s shortest river, River Morar, and Britain’s deepest freshwater loch, Loch Morar. Finally, the journey ends at the deepest seawater loch in all Europe, Loch Nevis!
Tickets must be booked ahead, especially during peak season. Click here to check Jacobite availability and to book tickets.
